Meghan and Harry take New York by storm

Meghan and Harry visited the One World Observatory in New York today, meeting with Governor Hochul, Mayor Bill de Blasio, his wife, First Lady Chirlane McCray, and their son, Dante de Blasio, making their first joined engagement since moving to the United States in 2020.

More from The Telegraph:

“The couple arrived at the One World Trade Center at 8.14am on Thursday, in two Range Rovers with blacked out windows. Prince Harry was wearing a dark suit and Meghan was in navy: a navy roll neck jumper, navy heels and a navy coat.

They held hands as they walked around to the front of the building. Prince Harry waved at a group of young women who screamed at him and shouted: “Harry!”

Earlier in the morning around 40 journalists and cameramen from major TV networks including NBC and ABC lined up at 6.45am to see the event.

One cameraman joked that when Meghan saw him she would “ditch Harry and go off with me – sorry buddy, it’s over!”

A young female TV reporter said she took the assignment because she “wanted to be in the presence of royalty””

I video of their arrival:

Asked by a reporter if they were enjoying their trip, Meghan smiled and replied: ‘It’s wonderful to be back, thank you.’ See the clip below

The One World Trade Center that Meghan and Harry are visiting today is the main building of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It is not only the tallest building in the US, but also the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, and the sixth tallest in the world.

Completed in 2014 and built in remembrance of the victims of September 11, 2001, One World Trade Center is a reminder of the lost lives. In the exact spots of the twin towers, two large square pools with a waterfall were built “to remain a tranquil and peaceful spot for people to pay tribute.”. Inscribed on the sides of the pools, you’ll find every name of the victims.

Fun fact: At 1,776 feet, its height matches the year of America’s birth.

And then they posed for the press

The mayor made the following tweet: “The tragedy of September 11 touched the entire world, and it’s still felt today. We’re honored to join Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, at One World Observatory.”

More from Telegraph:

“In a stark difference to a royal tour, the couple were expected to take instructions from New York photographers and cameramen who shouted for them to look this way and that.

“This is an unshootable shot for this angle,” one told them, as the Duke and Duchess appeared momentarily unsure about whether to obey or not.

After a few moments of confusion, where they exchanged words sotto voce, the Duke and Duchess put their masks back on to walk downstairs with a small entourage.”

Meghan and Harry then made their way outside the World Trade Centre just before 9am, stopping to pose for photographs outside the building

A video from the visit:

Hugs, kisses on the cheeks and handshakes were given as they said goodbye to Governor Hochul, Mayor Bill de Blasio, his wife, First Lady Chirlane McCray, and their son, Dante de Blasio and walked hand in hand passing a small group of well-wishers and towards the 9/11 memorial museum and the site where the twin towers once stood.

And a thumps up from Meghan to a well-wisher

Meghan did not stop to talk with anyone and according to The Telegraph “They were encircled by a rolling cordon of plain clothes officers, suited security guards and more than 100 New York police officers – some holding M4 machine guns and wearing body armor.”

Meghan and Harry made a pit stop at the memorial to the North tower, the vast pool of water with the names of those who lost their lives 9/11-2001.

Meghan and Harry spent almost an hour at the museum and the surrounding area, with Harry saying that his visit had been “great”. Both Meghan and Harry were described as “charming” by a security guard who followed them around and as “awesome” by one of the museum staff members.
