Meghan Markle made a surprise trip to New York City for a special event: a royal babyshower. On Tuesday morning Omid Scobie revealed on Good Morning America that Meghan’s s NYC trip has been in the works for months, all centered on this very important occasion.
According to reporters Meghan has been in New York for three days without the press knowing though she was spotted at Bonpoint, a high-end children’s clothing store, this past Saturday. Omid Scobie confirmed on Good Morning America that “Over the weekend she has been catching up with some of her closest friends, visiting favorite spots in the city and even shopping for baby clothes.”
The day before the babyshower, Meghan Markle was spotted leaving The Mark Hotel on the Upper East Side with her longtime friend Abigail Spencer,
They were on their way to lunch at the Met Breuer, which is a museum in New York. And while there are a few pictures of Meghan entering the museum, there are literally none of her inside.
The Met Breuer is a museum of modern and contemporary art at Madison Avenue. It serves as a branch museum of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (known as the Met). The Museum opened in March 2016 in the Breuer Building formerly occupied by the Whitney Museum of American Art, designed by Marcel Breuer and completed in 1966.
Meghan and Abigail then went for a bite to eat at Cafe Boulud – a French restaurant inside the Surrey Hotel located at 20 East 76th Street (between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue). The restaurant opened in 1998 and is owned by French celebrity chef and restaurateur Daniel Boulud.
Meghan Markle and Abigail Spencer then returned to The Mark Hotel where Meghan is staying and where the babyshower will take place. Reports stated that it will be held in the hotel’s penthouse suite, which boasts a price tag of $75,000 per night—making it the most expensive hotel room in the U.S. The suite includes three king-sized bedrooms, two queen-sized bedrooms, six bathrooms, and a private rooftop terrace with views of Central Park.
The hotel houses 106 hotel rooms and 47 suites. The hotel also features a Jean Georges Vongerichten restaurant and bar, a Frédéric Fekkai salon, John Lobb shoe care services, and an exclusive scent by Federick Malle.
After her day out in NYC with Abigail, Meghan was spotted on her way out for dinner at Ralph Lauren’s Polo Bar in the evening. We saw Meghan arriving alongside friends Abigail Spencer, Serena Williams, Jessica Mulroney, and Markus Anderson.
The Polo Bar is Ralph Lauren’s third restaurant, joining RL Restaurant, which opened in 1999 in Chicago, and Ralph’s, which opened in 2010 in Paris. The restaurant is inspired by Ralph Lauren’s love for gathering around the table with family and friends and classic New York establishments.
The next it was time for the babyshower. As stated before, the babyshower is held in the hotel’s penthouse suite, which boasts a price tag of $75,000 per night—making it the most expensive hotel room in the U.S. The suite includes three king-sized bedrooms, two queen-sized bedrooms, six bathrooms, and a private rooftop terrace with views of Central Park.
Attendees included Amal Clooney, Gayle King, Abigail Spencer, Jessica Mulroney, Misha Nonoo, Daniel Martin, Serena Williams, and Markus Anderson.
World-renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten catered a “dessert-tasting experience” for the attendees. If that didn’t satiate them, a cotton candy machine was delivered to the suite.
“A large cotton candy machine was also pictured being wheeled into the hotel. Meghan has been known to spoil her friends and co-workers with special treats.
“She would always do spirit boosters for the crew on-set — for example, having gourmet burgers delivered. It’s the same stuff she does with her office at [Kensington Palace] now. I came by there one day, and she had ordered an incredible ice-cream and sorbet stand for the office. They were remarking how it was the ‘best day of work ever.’ It warmed my heart to see her just continuing to be her and bring her style to the U.K.,” a former costar recently told PEOPLE.”
Daniel Martin also shared a photo to Instagram sharing the sweet cookies at the party: a stork, a white and pale green rattle and a bib featuring the word “baby” written in script.
Erin Hill, a New York City-based harpist, and singer who has played with Cyndi Lauper, Kanye West and Josh Groban, also arrived at the hotel with her harp in tow for the babyshower.
The babyshower began with a “flower-arranging lesson,”
Gayle King revealed more details about the shower, which she called “a small, private affair, and a special time for her,” during CBS’s This Morning. The TV personality confirmed that the guests indeed made floral arrangements —and all for a good cause.
“A good time was had by all,” King began. “I hope she won’t mind me sharing this because I’ve never seen anything like this at a baby shower. They did flower decorations. They had flower arranging, they brought in somebody to explain how to arrange flowers,” she said, adding, “We all each made an individual vase. And then Meghan, at her request, they got in touch with an organization I’ve never heard of with, Repeat Roses, and they’re all donated to different charities. I thought that was a very sweet thing.” (The Daily Mail notes that Repeat Roses is not charity but actually a business that charges breakdown events, but does also donate the leftover flowers to shelters, hospitals, and hospice centers.)
King then added: “It just speaks to who she is. She’s kind, she’s very generous. And a really, really sweet person.”
As Gayle mentioned in the video above, Repeat Roses scooped up the blooms and gifted them to pediatric cancer patients staying at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of New York.
The charity shared on their Instagram:
“We were honoured to match the beautiful floral arrangements designed by the Duchess of Sussex and her guests, including host @serenawilliams, to a few of our very favourite NYC neighbour organizations. The gesture of kindness brought smiles and an emotional health boost to paediatric cancer patients at @rmhnewyork, cancer patients at the @hopelodgenyc and to behaviourally and medically fragile men at the @uniquepeopleservices Vyse Avenues Program. The flowers brought a ray of sunshine on a cold winter day and will be greatly enjoyed for the week ahead. Repeat Roses was so honoured to help the Duchess of Sussex and her baby shower VIPs create a ripple effect of joy long after the special event was over. By pairing beautiful petals and positive energy, all of the ladies’ handcraft arrangements sent a burst of love and smiles to patients into three very special organizations.”
As for the gifts, a Babyletto 3-in-1 Hudson crib was seen being delivered to the hotel before the babyshower. Several other guests, including Gayle and Amal Clooney, were spotted carrying gift bags into the party, and Misha who was seen with a shopping bag from luxury home goods store Rani Arabella. And according to Gayle King, MGehna didn’t open any gifts during the babyshower – instead, Meghan plans to wait and open them in London alongside Harry.
Meghan was later that day seen leaving The Mark Hotel heading back to London and Harry!
We saw Meghan wearing some very nice clothes during her outings. For her Museum and lunch with Abigail she wore:
A Courreges Haute Couture trapeze coat from 1965, in matelassé silk. She purchased the Coat at William Vintage in London
She styled it with the H&M MAMA Shaping Skinny Jeans.
She wore her trusted Stuart Weitzman Legend Heels
And carried the Carolina Herrera Mariola Grey Shopper Tote
She accessorized with her Bar Jewelry Wide Ripple Bracelet, Pippa Small Herkimer Earrings, and Solange Azagury Partridge Love Ring
She wore the Le Specs Cat Eye Glasses
For her night out at the Ralph Lauren’s Polo Bar with her friend Meghan wore:
The Victoria Beckham Slim Tailored Coat. We saw the piece for the first time for Christmas Day 2018 with the Royal Family in Sandringham
Meghan styled the coat with the Tamara Mellon Black velvet ‘Kindred’ boots
She carried Stella McCartney Falabella Tote
Leaving the Mark Hotel Meghan changed to a much cozier outfit.
She wore Ingrid & Isobel Black Maternity Activewear Hoodie
With the Lululemon ‘Align’ Tights
She also wore the Adidas UltraBoost Sneakers.
She carried the Cuyana ‘Le Sud’ Day Bag
Meghan accessorized her outfit with the most adorable Jennifer Meyer ‘Mommy’ Necklace. The piece is in 18-karat gold and was gifted to Meghan as a baby shower gift, the brand confirmed. Though the term “mummy” is decidedly British, the brand’s website said the necklace was “made with love in Los Angeles,” which makes it even more special for the California-born duchess.
In other news, The Brits Award took place yesterday evening, and as predicted, Beyoncé and Jay-Z won award for Best International Group. Though they were not present in-person to accept their award, they recorded a clever acceptance speech in a video that paid tribute to Meghan.
“Thank you so much to the BRIT Awards for this incredible honor. You guys have always been so supportive. Everything is love,” Beyoncé said while holding the trophy and referencing the couple’s recent collaborative album. “Thank you.” Jay-Z jokingly deadpanned, “You’re welcome.”
