“The Duchess of Sussex spoke to the girl who had the big responsibility of performing the coin toss before the ladies’ singles final between Meghan’s friend Serena Williams and Germany’s Angelique Kerber.
The 11-year-old said the was both nervous and excited to meet the royals.
Tia Carter said yesterday: “Meghan asked how old I was, and what I was doing today. I told her I will be performing the coin toss and she said ‘so I will be seeing you later’.
Meghan and Kate then entered the Royal Box
A couple of days before the match, Serena Williams spoke out about Meghan attending the match, and how the pair have a “wonderful friendship”. She said: “Every year for a couple years she comes out to Wimbledon and has supported me. Now she’s supporting me in a different role, but our friendship is still exactly the same.”
Serena and Meghan have remained loyal friends since their first real hang out in 2014. Meghan wrote on her now-shut-down blog The Tig that the two crossed paths for the first time in Miami during the 2010 Super Bowl. But it would take a few more years for their friendship to blossom.
“We hit it off immediately, taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing in, and chatting not about tennis or acting, but about all the good old fashioned girlie stuff. So began our friendship,” Meghan revealed on The Tig.
Meghan and Kate took their seats and looked all relaxed and smiling:
Kate and Meghan were thick as thieves as they chatted during the men’s semi-final decider between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, who delayed the Ladies’ Singles Final by finishing the match that lasted six hours and 35 minutes.
Speaking about his win, Novak said: “I mean, it is hard to pick the words, I am just going through things, flashbacks to the last 14 months and everything I’ve done to get here, to the final against one of the best players in the world, one of the longest matches of my career. I am overwhelmed.”
Meghan and Kate also had a chat with Gill Brook, wife of AELTC chairman Philip Brook.
Serena had a fairly easy road to the Wimbledon final in her return to the All-England Club. Unfortunately, Serena lost to Angelique Kerber who won 6-3, 6-3 to win her third career major. In the process, Angelique denied WSerena a 24th career Grand Slam title, which would have tied Margaret Court’s all-time mark.
